Afghanistan - October 2010 –
Boorman : We can't lose this guy. He's high value.
Chris : Don't worry. We'll get your target out.
Chris men enter the house and shoot the men present. While Boorman goes to the car with the target, Chris's turn to the house, his men are dead.
Chris : Ow! Oh... Oh... Oh... Oh, my God. Oh, fuck. Oh, fuck! Sanchez, Sanchez... Lowry. Lowry. What the fuck happened? Okay. Rayburn! Franks! Come on. Come on, motherfucker, come on! Lowry, breathe! Oh, fuck.
He joined Boorman's car, which starts.
Chris : What the fuck happened to my men?
-----------------
Chris looks terrorists prepare its execution.
Terrorist : If you are a man of prayer, now would be a good time to begin.
At Hewes & Associates
Ellen : I've agreed to hand over all the evidence to Erickson as soon as he brings Chris home. I need you to sign this. Otherwise, there's no deal.
Patty : Ellen, I think you're making a mistake. You have everything you need to win this case.
Ellen : Chris's safety is what matters to me.
Patty : Erickson is not a man to negotiate with. He's just a different kind of terrorist.
Ellen : I'm out of options.
Patty : Didn't you tell me that you wanted a case that would put you on the map?
Ellen : But I'm not going to play chicken with Erickson while Chris's life is at stake.
Patty : Ellen... this is one of those moments. If you back down like this, even once, you will never have the power to win any of the cases that you believe in.
Ellen : Are you going to sign it or not?
Patty to sign against heart.
Terrorists are prepared. Carter enters
Terrorist : Just do it.
Carter : I want you to drink this, Chris. It's a sedative. Trust me, it'll make everything easier.
Chris refuses, but the terrorists forced him to swallow it by smothering.
Chris : What are you doing? What are you doing?
Chris falls to the ground.
Carter : I’ll take it from here.
Boorman recalls Erickson.
Erickson : Erickson.
Boorman : Good morning, Howard.
Erickson : It certainly is. I made a deal with the lawyers. Miss Parsons is going to settle.
Boorman : Well, then, you-you don't need the boy. Why don't you let me come by and pick him up?
Erickson : Well, here's the rub, Jerry. I just don't trust you anymore.
Boorman : The feeling's mutual. I hate to break it to you, Howard, but, uh, you're no patriot. You're not even a good Christian. Only thing you give a shit about is money.
Erickson : As soon as Parsons settles this case, I'm turning the boy over to the authorities.
Boorman : You send that boy back to Afghanistan, it's a death sentence. He's an outcast. Why the fuck do you think I took him out of there?
Erickson : Bye, Jerry.
For its part, Patty makes an appointment with Owen.
Patty (at phone): This is Patty Hewes. I have some information I'd like to share with you.
Later
Patty : Mr. Owen?
Owen : Ms. Hewes.
Patty : I thought you should know that Gerald Boorman met with me regarding the case against High Star.
Owen : What did Mr. Boorman have to say?
Patty : He told me all about the history of Operation Dust Devil. How the CIA recruited Howard Erickson for illegal extractions.
Owen : Dust Devil was a stupid program started under my predecessor, and I stopped it.
Patty : The mission last October that killed three High Star employees was a Dust Devil operation. Why was the CIA pulling out that boy? Who is he? Mr. Owen, one way or another, everything I know is going public, so you have two choices. You can either be the hero that cleans up the agency, or the guy who destroys his career trying to protect it.
Owen : Boorman told me Erickson went rogue on that mission, but if this is who they got out, it's clear he lied to me.
Patty : Who is the boy?
Owen : Kosha Durani. His mother was an asset of Boorman's. He got valuable information from her. But then he got too close.
Patty : Too close how?
Owen : They had an intimate relationship. When the mullahs found out the boy's mother was sleeping with an infidel, she was put on trial. We believe that she was executed.
Patty : So the child—was Boorman the father?
Owen : It's not like we went in to get a DNA test. I can't say.
Patty : Would the agency attest to all of this in a court of law?
Owen : Obviously, Boorman and High Star are a problem for us. If you've got a solution, I'm listening.
Asleep, Chris saw the scene in which Lowry informs its disagreement to the latter mission.
Lowry : I don't like this one. We're not ready. This whole thing's been put together at the last minute. It's bullshit.
Chris : This is a high-value target, and our window's closing.
Lowry : Fuck it. This is it, man. I promised my wife I'm going home and I'm driving a school bus.
A little later, Lowry is dying.
Chris : Lowry! Come on. Come on, motherfucker, come on! Look at me, Lowry! Lowry! Breathe!
Later, Chris wakes.
Carter : Welcome back to the States. Change your clothes. Your friend Ellen Parsons cut a deal to save your life.
Ellen watching a video, Chris kept a diary and talk to him.
Chris : March 18, 2011. I'm alive, Ellen. I'm alive.
Erickson Takes care of the young Kosha and shows him a sword.
Erickson : Grip it, like that. Yeah. You'll get the hang of it. Yeah.
Carter : You wanted to see me?
Erickson : Yeah. I'm gonna be conducting business in the office shortly. Do me a favor and watch the kid.
Carter : Of course.
Erickson : Okay. You go with my friend, A.C. You'll have fun. He'll show you around. Keep him in the warehouse in the north end-- he could play around up there. Be nice to him; he's a good kid.
Carter : Yes, sir.
The phone rings.
Erickson : Erickson.
Ellen : Mr. Erickson, I'm leaving for the High Star compound now. If Ms. Hewes doesn't hear from me within six hours, she's contacting the authorities.
Erickson : Understood.
Patty is at the office door of Ellen.
Ellen : I know your position on this, Patty, but... I'm not changing my mind.
Patty : Clarity can be useful.
Ellen : Yeah, it can.
Boorman from home, he has a weapon in the pocket.
Patty and Michael are again face to face.
Michael's lawyer : Ms. Hewes, I'd much rather do this with your attorney present.
Patty : I am my attorney. I'll be representing myself.
Lawyer : Well, as you know, my client is seeking joint custody of his daughter, Catherine.
Patty : Yes, and as you know, I'm Catherine's legal guardian. To get custody, you're going to have to prove that I perpetrated fraud... or used coercion in order to adopt her.
Michael : The fraud you perpetrated was convincing the State you were a fit mother.
Lawyer : Michael, let me do the talking. Since you are the opposing attorney, I will get you a list of the witnesses we'd like to call.
Patty : Ah, yes, a parade of character assassins to testify to my... maternal limitations. I'm just wondering who you managed to dig up, Michael. Some of your old baby-sitters? Daniel Purcell... a self-confessed wife murderer?
Lawyer : Who's Daniel Purcell?
Michael : My real father.
Patty : Phil the adulterer?
Michael : My stepfather.
Patty : Who else? Because I can assure you, whoever you find to attack my character, I will be more than ready to decimate theirs.
Michael : We'll see.
Lawyer : As I said, Ms. Hewes, we'll get you a list of our witnesses.
Patty : I'm looking forward to it.
Ellen in her car, Boorman moved the passenger side.
Boorman : Hello. I have a gun. Don't turn around. Now, don't worry, I'm not here to hurt you. We both want something from Howard Erickson. I know you're trying to work a deal with him for Chris Sanchez's life.
Ellen : And what has Erickson got that you want?
The boy. I'm not interrogating the kid, I'm protecting him.
Ellen : Well, Patty didn't believe you, and neither do I.
Boorman : I don't care if you don't believe me. I have a gun. So, you're gonna help me get the kid back. Now, drive.
Carter prepares a sandwich for Kosha.
Carter : After you finish eating, you can play. I need you to stay up here, don’t go downstairs. Stay here. I’ll be back.
Chris is still tied up, he thinks of Ellen.
Ellen : Rayburn, Franks, Lowry. You knew them. These were your men. Do you know how they died?
Then they leave for the mission.
Carter : Everybody in. You boys ready? Come on, Tommy. Whoo-hoo! Everyone, "Double D's" on three. One, two, three!
Carter takes a photo of four men : Rayburn, Franks, Lowry and Chris .
Four men : Double D's!
Kosha plays with a ball, it fell down the stairs, the child down.
Chris : Hey! Who's there? Is someone there?
Patty meets Herndon.
Patty : You were right-- Owen is Boorman's handler.
Herndon : Really? So, what did the prick have to say?
Patty : He was very cooperative, actually.
The ball rolled near the container brought by Barkowski. Kosha opens and closes the door on seeing Chris tied. Soon after, Kosha reopens the door.
Chris : Is anyone there? I'm hungry. I need something to eat. Hey! Come back! Come back, you can come back in here.
Kosha : I see you, before. With... gun.
Chris : Who brought you here?
Boorman? Th-The man that I was... with that day, did he bring you here?
Kosha : Many men
Chris : Yes. Many men, yes. My unit... um, the men who came to get you... I'm sorry. We never should have done that. Um...
Kosha : You... do not see.
Chris : Uh, see what?
Kosha : The men. All die.
Chris : You saw all the men die? Please tell me. Tell me what you saw.
-------------------------------
Lowry : Clear! Clear!
Boorman : Wait out here. – I told you I would come. Where is she ? Where is your mother ? She said she would be here !
Kosha : I don(t know where she is.
Boorman : Where is she ?
Kosha : ¨Please ! I don’t know where she is !
Boorman : Goddamn it!
Lowry : We've got to move. Jesus, who the fuck is that?
Boorman : Goddamn Our target. We're pulling him out.
Chris : Step it up, guys!
Boorman : Make sure this perimeter is secure. We're taking him out of here.
Then gunfire, and the bodies of three men bloodied.
-------------------------------
Chris : Are you sure you saw all that?
Ellen's car stops at the entrance to High Star.
Barkowski : Step out of the car. May I? You can come with me. Search the inside, too.
At Hewes & Associates
Herndon : So Boorman basically kidnapped the kid.
Patty : And the CIA isn't interested in protecting Boorman.
Herndon : Good! We can't lose. Take this thing to court already. Man, let's sue the shit out of these people, huh?
Patty : I can't.
Herndon : Why can't you?
Patty : Ellen settled the case.
Herndon : Well, how could you let her do that?
Patty : I said I'd support her; I signed off on it.
Herndon : That is such shit! I mean, how could you do that?! So what happens to Boorman now? And High Star? What, they get off with a fuckin' slap on the wrist, huh?
Patty : I'm still gonna try a case. I just need a different plaintiff.
Herndon : Where are you gonna find another plaintiff?
Patty : The Alien Torts Act.
Herndon : R... Right.
Patty : I can file a complaint on behalf of a foreign citizen.
Herndon : The boy! Of course! Yeah, but we can't wait. I mean, you got to file today. We don't know what's gonna happen to this kid.
Patty : Maggie, call Judge Powloski's clerk.
Carter opens the door of the container.
Carter : I told you to wait upstairs. Wait outside.
Carter (to Chris):Ellen Parsons is on the compound. If she delivers what she promised, then you'll be free to go.
Chris : A.C., that boy... he was the target we took out.
Carter : Bullshit.
Chris : No, he... Boorman said he-he had high-value information.
Carter : That boy can't be older than 12 years old.
Chris : Listen to me, okay? I just... I just need you to fuckin' listen to me. He was there. He saw how our guys died!
Carter : Chris, what are you talking about?
Boorman kills the soldier when he opened the trunk in which it was hidden.
Meanwhile, in the office of Erickson.
Erickson : Ms. Parsons, welcome. You remember Mr. Shaw, my attorney? Why don't we have a seat?
Ellen : I have everything you requested-- evidence from Mr. Boorman... agreement signed by all parties.
Erickson : Make sure this is kosher, Jack.
Ellen : Where is he?
Erickson : Well, if the agreement checks out, you'll be seeing him shortly. Why don't you have a seat?
A text message arrives on mobile Shaw.
Shaw : Are you kidding? You really thought you could get away with this?
Ellen : What are you talking about?
Erickson : Th-The settlement's no good?
Shaw : The settlement's fine. Patty Hewes is suing us.
Ellen : What?
Shaw : She's filed a new lawsuit with a new plaintiff. I just received this from the court.
Ellen : Who's the plaintiff?
Shaw : A 12-year-old Afghani boy.
Erickson : Kosha Durani. Maybe you should see this. Unless you already know about it.
Shaw : Of course she does. They want you to settle this case so they can turn around and file another.
Erickson : You didn't know about it, did you? Patty Hewes went behind your back. Either way... you and I no longer have a deal.
Ellen : Where is Chris Sanchez?
Erickson : I'm afraid Mr. Sanchez is still in Afghanistan. If you'll excuse me, I have some business to take care of.
Carter : How do you know that kid is telling you the truth?
Chris : Why would he lie? Think about it.
Carter : Let's just hope Ellen Parsons comes through for you.
Chris : Why would he lie? Why would he lie?
Carter puts the hood over the head of Chris.
Outside.
Erickson : Patty Hewes filed a new lawsuit. You know what has to be done.
Barkowski : Sanchez?
Erickson : Make it look like we talked about. I want video evidence. And before you do it... I want Sanchez to hear from me personally.
Barkowski : What do you mean, sir?
Ellen call Patty
Ellen : What the fuck are you doing?
Patty : I assume you've heard by now. I'm taking down High Star.
Ellen : Drop your case now.
Patty : I'm afraid I can't do that.
Ellen : Do not fuck with me, Patty. You'll regret this.
Patty : Good-bye, Ellen.
Ellen : Patty!
Chris : Who's there? A.C.?
A hooded man enters the container and Chris lights a television.
Erickson (on TV): Praise God... and good evening. Fills my heart with joy to be here with you tonight.
hooded man : Mr. Erickson would like you to watch this.
Erickson (on TV): This week my six-year-old son made a Christmas card for me.
Chris : What the fuck is this?
Erickson : It said "Peace on Earth... goodwill to all men." "Peace on Earth."
Ellen : I don't know what Patty Hewes is trying to do, but you have my word, if you deliver Chris Sanchez to me, he will never testify against you.
Erickson : Ms. Parsons, our business is over.
Ellen : Right now your problem isn't Chris Sanchez, it's Gerald Boorman. He's on the compound.
Erickson : I doubt that very much.
Ellen : I drove him in myself.
Soldier (at phone) : South gate.
Erickson : I Why isn't north gate answering?
Soldier (at phone) : I don't know, sir.
Erickson (on TV): I tell you, your suffering is not in vain. The pain you endure, no matter how unbearable... will bring you closer to God.
Hidden in the warehouse, Kosha see two hooded men armed with a sword, into the container of Chris.
Chris : That was very enlightening. I thought you said Ellen Parsons made a deal.
The phone of one of the men rings.
Erickson : Stop what you're doing-- Jerry Boorman's on the compound.
Carter : Meaning what?
Erickson : Meaning find him.
Carter : What about Sanchez?
Erickson : Forget Sanchez. Get Boorman. Use whatever force necessary.
Carter : It's Erickson. Change of plans.
Barkowski fate. Carter remains to Chris.
Carter : I've thought about it, Sanchez. What you told me about
the boy, I believe you.
Outside, Boorman kills Barkowski.
In the office of Erickson, Ellen thinks to Chris.
-----------------------------------
Chris : I was happy to hear from you. You've come a long way since sneaking wine coolers into proms.
-----------------------------------
Boorman enters the warehouse. He sees Kosha bring a sandwich to Chris.
Kosha : I brought you this. You said you were hungry. Please eat.
Boorman : Kosha?
The door of the container closes means four shots.
In Erickson’s office.
Carter : Ms. Parsons.
Ellen : Who are you?
Carter : I know where Chris is. I'll take you to him.
Ellen follows Carter in the basement.
Carter : I'll get the car and I'll be back for you.
Ellen : Is Chris really alive?
Carter : He's fine. He's right in there. I'll be back.
Ellen enters the container. She discovers a hooded corpse, bathed in blood. Horrified, she picks up medal Dust Devil and collapses on the floor crying. Kosha comes and sits next to her.
Patty is at Dr. Baldwin.
Dr Baldwin : Congratulations. This is your last session.
Patty : So have I been reformed? Can I reenter civilized society?
Dr Baldwin : A bsolutely. I'll send in the paperwork today. You'll be free.
Patty : So any... parting words of wisdom?
Dr Baldwin : Don't slam doors in people's faces. Anything you want to talk about?
Patty : Not particularly.
Dr Baldwin : Okay. May I ask how things are, uh... going with your son?
Patty : We'll be going to court.
Dr Baldwin : Mm. Are you worried you're gonna lose custody of your granddaughter?
Patty : No. The law is entirely on my side.
Dr Baldwin : Whatever happened with that... that young woman we were talking about?
Patty : After I decided to help her, she... quit on me. She's dropping the case.
Dr Baldwin : Are you disappointed in her?
Patty : No. That's who she is. She's good... but she's not a force.
Dr Baldwin : Mm, not many people are.
Patty : The problem is, she wants to be, she wants to... get out from under my shadow. But she'll never be able to. I won't let her. She's still useful to me.
Dr Baldwin : I see.
Erickson enters the container. He removes the hood to the corpse lying on the floor ... and discovers Boorman.
Ellen and Kosha, meet Chris at the top of the stairs.
Ellen (to Kosha): We have to stay together, okay? Chris?
Chris : Come on. Let's go. Move. Let's go.
--------------------
Kosha : I brought you this. You said you were hungry.
Chris : Thank you. Can you... can you help me?
Boorman : Kosha?
Boorman enters the container. Kosha seconded the hands of Chris.
Boorman : Kosha? Come on. I'm gonna take you home. Hey... come on. Come on!
Hidden behind the door, hitting Chris Boorman then he ties on the chair in his place and he puts his hood.
Chris (to Kosha): Meet me outside. Go!
Chris (to Boorman): Franks. Rayburn. Lowry.
Boorman : What about 'em?
Chris : See this? This is all I have left from my men. This.
Boorman : Aah! Those men were hired to complete a mission. And they refused.
--------------------
Lowry : Jesus, who the fuck is that?
Boorman : Our target. We're pulling him out.
Lowry : No, we're not. He's a fuckin' kid.
Boorman : He's got valuable information.
Lowry : What information can a child have?!
Boorman : You get paid to do a job-- now, shut up and do it. Make sure this perimeter is secure. We're taking him out of here.
Lowry : Fuck that. I'm not doing this shit to a kid. We're not gonna let you take him, we're leaving him.
Boorman : I'm telling you, he's got intel!
Lowry : Yeah, you gonna torture him?
Boorman : We need him!
Lowry : Sorry, man, I can't do it.
Francs : I'm out.
Rayburn : We're not letting you take him.
Chris (out): Let's go! We got to move now!
While Chris called out, Boorman draws on each of the men.
Chris : We got to move! What the fuck's going on?!
-------------------------
Boorman : Listen... Listen to me. The boy... The boy... he's my son. He's my son. Ah, you don't believe me? I did it. I shot your men. You know what? I'd do it again. I'd do it again!
Chris gets four shots on Boorman.
Later, at Hewes & Associates
Patty : I am so sorry for the terrible ordeal that you've been through, Mr. Sanchez.
Chris : I knew we were extracting human targets for interrogation. And I knew... it was illegal.
Patty : Then why did you do it?
Chris : I was told Dust Devil was necessary for national security, that it was authorized by the CIA.
Ellen : Has the CIA been able to verify Gerald Boorman's criminal involvement in everything Mr. Sanchez has said here today?
Owen : Yes. Gerald Boorman was a disgrace to the agency.
Patty : In light of that, I've secured a guarantee from the CIA that they won't make any more inquiries into Mr. Boorman's death.
Chris : I'm not looking for special treatment.
Owen : Mr. Sanchez, we would prefer there be no investigation. It would not be beneficial to the agency.
Patty : We are not seeking to prosecute anyone.
Chris : Ellen said the families of my men will be taken care of.
Patty : Yes, your testimony against Howard Erickson will ensure it.
Chris : And what's going to happen to the company?
Patty : High Star will be put out of business, and Howard Erickson will go to prison.
Ellen : I think we're done here.
Patty : Yes. For now.
Owen : Thank you, sir.
Chris : Mm-hmm. Thank you.
Erickson met with his son in his living room, the FBI enters.
Erickson : The Lord... works in mysterious ways. But it's not our place to question His will. We wake every morning ready to fulfill His plan for us.
FBI : It's time, Mr. Erickson.
Erickson : We need to be brave... and strong. And... even if I don't know the Lord's plan... well, I know that I love you boys. And I love this country.
Ellen and Chris walk Gwharri.
Chris : I don't understand. Why aren't you trying the case?
Ellen : I still believe in the case, and I want Patty to win it. I-I just can't be involved.
Chris : Okay.
Ellen : I thought about you when you were gone.
Chris : Yeah, I thought about you, too.
Ellen : I mean... I thought about you a lot.
Chris : Ellen, I... I'm not really in the... best state of mind these days.
Ellen : Oh, I... I understand.
Chris : I'm not sure if I'd be great company.
Ellen : Oh, well... whenever you feel like it-- if you ever feel like it—and you're interested, I'm there. I'm here. I'm here. I just wanted to let you know that. That's all.
Chris : Okay.
Facing the Statue of Liberty, Patty waits Ellen.
Patty : I hope you understand now why I did what I did.
Ellen : No, I don't. Chris could have been killed. You just got lucky.
Patty : If you want to win a case like this, you have to take risks.
Ellen : I had made a decision. You went behind my back.
Patty : I was saving you from yourself. You know, everyone wants to know the story of this case. Journalists are coming out of the woodwork. I want you to take the interviews. You deserve the credit.
Ellen : It's your case now. I don't want any part of it.
Patty : Don't be stupid. The civil case will get attention. It will put you on the map. You'll win.
Ellen : You don't get it. I won when I put Chris ahead of winning.
Patty : I can understand why you're so angry right now, but you will get over it. You know... I've always wanted to find someone... a woman... who could step into my shoes, take over the reins someday.
Ellen : That's not what you want. You want someone you can manipulate. Someone like Tom who'd give you their life while you sit on your throne. You know what your problem is, Patty? You chose winning over everything-- your husband, your son, me. All you have in your life is your next case. There's nothing else.
Patty : You think success made me lonely? Failure is lonely. You want to be successful and nice. A mother, a wife. Well, you can't.
Ellen : You couldn't, but I can try.
Patty : Well, call me when you're 60. Let me know how that works out for you. I am offering you my hand, Ellen. I will not offer it again. You and I can still do great things together.
Ellen : I'm not interested.
Patty : I have given you everything you asked for. You are an ungrateful child, and you are in for a rude awakening.
Ellen : Good-bye, Patty.
To Ellen’s Office.
Maggie : Do you need any help, Ms. Parsons?
Ellen : Oh, thank you, Maggie. Yes, if you could send this stuff to my apartment?
Maggie : Of course. You won't be coming back?
Ellen : No. It was nice working with you.
Maggie : What is it?
Ellen : Oh, this was the first office I ever had. It made me feel important.
Maggie : Well, you are important. You got to work for Patty Hewes.
Patty is an interview on television.
TV : So you have filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the company?
Patty : Yes. Three High Star employees were killed, and I'm representing their families.
TV : But you also filed a second suit, and that claim was on behalf of a 12-year-old Afghan boy, correct?
Patty : Yes, that's right. This child was abducted by High Star for the purposes of interrogation.
TV : Unbelievable.
Michael shows up at his mother.
Michael : I was in the neighborhood, so I thought I'd drop this off. Our list of witnesses.
Patty : And how many people have you found to testify against me?
Michael : It's all in there. Have a good night.
Patty : I think corruption is corruption, no matter where you find it. That's why we have civil cases.
TV : Well, when it comes to toppling the forces of greed, you are like a one-woman wrecking ball. Oh, well... You have single-handedly brought High Star to justice. Somebody had to stop Howard Erickson. Well, we're certainly grateful for your courage.
Patty : Thank you.
TV : Thank you, Ms. Hewes.
On the witness list, one name is Ellen Parsons.
